Abstract

The article deals with the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of vitality/hardiness, its structural components and the relationship with the concept of resilience, and the empirical study of the connection between a person's resilience and coping strategies used by him in a stressful situation and his perception of life as existentially meaningful.
It is noted that the concept of vitality, which thanks to D.O. Leontiev has established itself in modern psychology to denote the phenomenon of hardiness, introduced into science by S. Kobasa and S. Maddi, is not identical to its equivalent, since the concept of vitality in English corresponds to the concept of resilience. However, if vitality is understood by scientists mainly as a personal trait, then the concept of resilience is interpreted by them as a corresponding behavioral manifestation of personality. In addition, resilience and hardiness are related as a whole and a part, that is, more quantitatively than they differ qualitatively.
It is concluded that vitality is a basic characteristic of a person, a holistic system of his cognitive-emotional attitudes and behavioral manifestations, which a person uses in stressful situations, turning their course and consequences into a means of increasing his life experience, wisdom and self-realization.
The research used the following methods: theoretical: analysis of scientific psychological literature on the researched problem, synthesis, comparison and generalization of views of various scientists on hardiness; empirical: vitality test by S. Maddy and D. Koshaba; coping test by R. Lazarus, S. Folkman; scale of existence A. Lengle, K. Orgler; of mathematical statistics: correlation analysis (Pearson r) and Mann-Whitney U-test.
The results of our research show that vitality helps an individual to select and use coping strategies that are adequate to overcome relevant life situations (covid and war) and is related to the degree and features of a person's meaningfulness of life.
The conclusions were drawn that: 1) in a war situation, the number of coping methods used by a person increases compared to quarantine isolation, however, in both problematic situations, respondents tend to use confrontational coping to quickly and actively overcome a difficult life situation; 2) respondents with a higher level of vitality mostly inclined to use distancing coping and problem-solving planning coping, while a weaker development of vitality encourages them to use confrontational coping.
