Abstract

The purpose of the article is to study the psychological features of the emotional intelligence of students of art and non-art majors and to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and an individual's resistance to stress. The authors used a number of methods. Theoretical methods: theoretical analysis and systematization of scientists' views on emotional intelligence, comparison, and generalization of research works on the problem. Empirical methods: Hall test of emotional intelligence and stress resistance questionnaire. Mathematical and statistical methods: Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient and the Manny-Whitney U-criterion.
The article gives a theoretical analysis of the development of emotional intelligence in students of art and non-art majors, as well as an empirical study. As a result of the empirical research, it was found that the students of both studied groups have mainly a low level of emotional intelligence, which provides the need for its development. The results indicate that no significant differences were found in the level of the studied trait in students of art and non-art majors.
The authors show that students of the studied sample showed higher level on such aspects as emotional awareness and empathy and lower level on management of one's own emotions and self-motivation. Statistical criteria were used to study the relationship between the level of general and partial emotional intelligence and the level of a person’s resistance to stress. As a result, it was proved that there is no statistically significant relationship between the level of general emotional intelligence and resistance to stress. However, a statistically significant relationship between managing one’s emotions and resistance to stress, as well as between self-motivation and resistance to stress in students of non-art majors, was found.
