The article is devoted to the phenomenon of mental rigidity of a personality and its connection with other psychological categories. The ideas of scientists concerning the concept of "psychological rigidity" were analysed. The multifaceted nature of the phenomenon of rigidity in psychology has been outlined. The results of theoretical research prove that psychological rigidity of the personality is a continuum, which is: both a state and a property of the personality; both a factor, that contributes to the manifestation of the psychological protection mechanisms, and their consequence. The psychophysiological and neurobiological nature of rigidity was described.
The article mainly focuses on the analysis of the relationship between rigidity and individual characteristics of a person. It was stated that rigidity plays a key role in the process of defining the types of character accentuations. It has been found that it affects the social status of an individual. Its direct influence on the value-semantic sphere of a personality was highlighted. The correlation between rigidity and stress has also been emphasised.
Besides, it was described that rigidity reduces the adaptive potential of the individual, causes social maladaptation and leads to mental disorders. The article also highlighted the results of other researches concerning the notion of rigidity as a pathopsychological condition.
